The Vows

I have come down from heaven not to do my will but the will of him who sent me.

John 6: 38

Poverty

God wants to be my treasure

We believe that the meaning of poverty is following Jesus Christ and growing into his image. Poverty is deeply personal and is not only about “things” but also about relations between people. We are to animate the love of Christ by letting go of earthly things and working daily to strive for poverty.

  • Poverty is about the willingness to discard the right or need of external possessions.
  • It is the willingness to be available to the community with our whole being.
  • It is to willingly and actively participate in the spirit of poverty diligently.
  • Poverty is also about being happy with yourself, your appearance, personality, limitations and talents.
  • One must not be totally absorbed by the material, worldly goods, but must aim at having a certain distance from them.
Chastity

God wants to be my dearest friend

Celibacy is an unconditional and absolute YES of a faithful religious to the kingdom of God, that God alone be all in all and becomes a witness before man. First of all, it witnesses that the kingdom exists in reality and secondly, how this kingdom will be.
  • A Religious should prefer nothing above the will of God
  • One cannot be faithful as a celibate if one is not faithful in prayer
  • To live in celibate chastity does not mean living a life of emptiness, it is not a NO, but rather a YES, it is a fulfilment
  • The core of the celibate life is the intimate communion with Jesus Christ in prayer and sacraments
  • Chastity is the loving concern for others and participation in their joys and pains
Obedience

God wants to be my true leader

No idol should take place in the heart which rightly belongs to God. This involves a willingness to renounce satisfactions which are not guided by the will of God. This also needs to be accompanied by prayer. This requires saying YES to the will of God every day. It is a willingness to give our desires, dreams and wills to the bigger will of God by following the example of Jesus who was obedient to the Father and suffered death on the cross.

The Religious is obedient to:

  • God
  • The Gospel
  • The Teachings of the Church
  • The Third Order Regular Rule of St Francis
  • The superiors and charism of our Community
